endings and beginnings......

this is a REALLY LONG post......

just sayin'.....

Today is the end of an era.....
it's been a long time coming and yet feels like it is here in a heartbeat....
it's Isaac's last day at school today and that just feels extremely odd.....
it makes me feel quite old and nostalgic if I am honest.....

over the next four weeks he has his final school exams to take
and a Leavers Ball to enjoy but there will be no more classes and no more homework....
hopefully there will be some revision though!

When Isaac was tiny we decided that we would be home educating him; we saw no need for him to 'go to school' when we could provide everything needed at home for him to learn, grow and develop. We came to learn that it was a tricky concept for most people to come to terms with - this 'home education' lark prompted so many questions - most of which centred around that fact that a lot of people believed that somehow our children would be socially disadvantaged because they had not spent 7 hours a day in a classroom with a large group of children the same age as them.  I quickly realised that this was the most frequent question I would get asked for the next 12 years or so and actually still get asked today when people find out that Isaac {and Evie} were home educated for most of their lives to this point.

For those who may read this who do not home educate, or have never thought of home education as a viable option for them, let me assuage your concerns and tell you that, from my experience, children will not become socially inept because they are educated 'at home'.  I put the words 'at home' in quotation marks because much of our education did not happen in our home. We spent many hours with friends in outdoor spaces, on days out to various local museums, parks, libraries, play spaces, National Trust properties, mountains, local community colleges, theatres...... let's just say that we had to make sure we scheduled in time to be at home as there were so many opportunities for us to be elsewhere.

And since when has education been limited to a time or place?  In my humble opinion it can, and does, happen anywhere and at any time!  I started to read to Isaac in the first few months of his life and not a day would go by when we wouldn't read books together {I actually continued to read aloud to Isaac and Evie nearly every afternoon until they were pre-teens!}.  In the very early years, it was me reading aloud to him, finding favourite stories that we would read again and again {and again, until I was almost ready to 'loose' that book but could never bring myself to do so} and then, it seemed overnight, Isaac could read by himself and that opened up a whole new world for him....  he was an avid, voracious and expansive reader who would pick up anything and read it....... I loved that about him...... books were his 'thing'..... well, books and lego!  He spent hours reading and building and playing.  One of his favourite things to do was to spend time in the garden {we were blessed with, in inner city terms at least, a large garden and this was the most amazing learning space for our kids} where he would use the left over pipes and guttering {it was an older house that needed complete renovation when we moved in so there was always lots of building supplies lying around} and he was fascinating by moving water {he called it 'uddy water'}.  He would spend hours building the most intricate of water systems out of whatever he could find and then spend just as long pouring water into the top end and watching as it moved through the maze of pipes and gutters and came out at the bottom end.  We always thought he would end up being an engineer because he loved working out the way things worked and why they worked and how they worked......

Education is a lifelong journey..... it doesn't start at 8.50 and finish when the final bell of the day rings.  It is something that is organic and continuous..... happening at all times and in all places. There are very few periods in life where we are not learning something and Brian and I were truly convinced that, as long as we allowed his questions and explorations, he would thrive.

We did try taking him along to a nursery for two afternoon sessions a week but he was not a happy camper and really didn't want to stay.... he kept telling me that they wanted him to play but he wanted to read books, they wanted him to paint or do something messy and he didn't like to get messy..... a couple of years later I did take him, along with Evie, to a local community college where we all did pottery classes and, guess what?..... he still didn't enjoy getting messy {it's just 'not his thing'} but he did make some fantastic ceramic pieces which we still love to this day.  I completely get that pre-school or nursery need to have structures in place because of the logistics of having the amount of children who are in each class {and also because they are given Government targets to fulfil} but it just didn't suit us as a family and certainly didn't suit Isaac as an individual.  He wanted to be home with me and his little sister, exploring the garden, reading his books and having after lunch quiet time in his room {which continued for many years in our house!} and I was happy to facilitate this.  Some people may think that I was being dictated to by my 3/4 year old..... I certainly don't believe that I was..... I was listening to him, to what he enjoyed {and didn't enjoy} and I was trusting my own instincts that told me he would be happier at home and would thrive just the same - in all ways.  Brian and I were very comfortable to allow him to pursue the things he enjoyed and which seemed to be teaching him so much about the world around him.  He still interacted with other children {of all ages} at church, in the local cub scout group, at our home ed gatherings and within other friendship groups so he wasn't isolated in any way but he was able to join in when he wanted and to withdraw when he was 'full up' with being with others.  It's funny that Brian has worked in schools/education for Isaac's entire life and has often made the observation that children can be isolated at school or unhappy at school or disengaged at school - they are who they are regardless of where their education takes place.  Being home educated does not make them 'awkward' or 'introverted' - they would probably have those characteristics/personality traits wherever their education took place - school probably makes it more difficult for them to be 'who they really are'.  Going to school does not necessarily make you more 'social' or more 'well balanced', in fact I believe that it can have the opposite effect and being home educated does not make you an introvert or socially inept - again it can have the opposite effect.  Children's personalities are complex things and we can't have a 'one-size-fits-all' system and think that it is the right thing for everyone.  Now I'm not knocking school..... for some it is their only choice and for others, looking back, it was a blissful place of friendship and enjoyment but for many it is not the right 'fit'.   However, people don't feel they have a choice about the education of their child because they either are not aware of the choices or because they can't financially make a different choice.  School is, by default, the place that the majority of children end up and, if I am honest, I'm not sure it's always the right place.....

Isaac had his first taste of school when we made our first move to Australia.  Brian was appointed as head of faculty at a school in Ballarat, Victoria with the specific goal of introducing a qualification in Philosophy at VCE level {A level in the UK}.  Isaac was keen by this stage {he was 9 years old} to 'have a go' and see what school was like so we enrolled him into a grade 4 class and he began to attend school for the first time.  There were things he enjoyed - especially spending time with his class teacher who understood him in a way that many other teachers would not have.  He also enjoyed the classroom library and helping others with their maths problems!  It was, overall, a positive year but we knew that home education was a better option and he was happy to have had the experience of school but to be back home at the end of the year.  He was home educated again for the next 4 and a half years {two more in Australia and two and a half back in the UK} and then, on our return to Australia {this time to Perth on the west coast} he began attending school by his own choice again {he was nearly 15 at this point}.  He enjoyed 7 months in school in Perth and then had 9 more months at home {as we returned to the UK} before making the decision to attend school full time in the UK from September 2015 {as he turned 16}.  During his 9 months at home we decided together that he should take a couple of iGCSE exams as he knew he would be starting school in year 11 and would have just one year to complete a set of qualifications which he hadn't specifically studied for and which would normally be taken over 2 years.  So we prepared at home for English Language and Maths exams pulling in a little help from teacher friends so that he felt as prepared as possible for what were his very first exams..... ever!  He smashed them and began year 11 with eight more subjects to study, some of which he'd never studied before {Business & Economics, Design Technology and Religious Studies} and some he had enjoyed at home but had never studied the UK curriculum for {Information Computer Technology, Physics and Chemistry}.  He picked up Additional Maths and English Literature during this year too and just had to 'catch up' the bits he had missed..... the school were fab at giving him a specialised timetable so that he could prepare as much as possible and, for one subject {RS}, he just read the text book and asked Brian for help as he couldn't join a class for that one.

He began sixth form on a level footing with the rest of his year - starting right at the beginning of the courses and has spent the last two years learning and pursuing his interests {and being a teenager which means spending more time on the computer and social media than this mum and dad would ideally have liked!!} but he is now nearly at the end of his time at school {but not nearly at the end of his education!}  He took one A level last year in Maths and over the next 4 weeks will continue his exams in Further Maths, Physics and Chemistry; will have a big end of year party with his cohort {known formally as the Leavers Ball} and will {officially} leave Dean Close School.

So what's next?  Well, he applied to a number of Universities along with the majority of the rest of his cohort and received offers from Bristol, Bath, Exeter and Cardiff to read Maths....... but he has decided that the full-time University route is not for him {much to the surprise of a number of his teachers!!}

Last summer he arranged his own work experience at GE Aviation here in Cheltenham and loved it. Alongside his University applications he applied for apprenticeships with GE Aviation, the MOD in Bristol and Dyson - all engineering degree apprenticeships which would give him the opportunity to earn a degree {paid for by the company}, earn a wage and learn more about something which has always interested him {remember me saying that we always thought he would be an engineer??}  He went through a rigorous assessment and interview process and was offered a placement with GE Aviation beginning in September 2018 which he has accepted {he also got through to the MOD interview stage but knew that GE was really where he wanted to be so declined to proceed any further}.  He said to me yesterday that he is really excited about beginning his apprenticeship - that makes me so happy - he has followed his heart!

I'm so proud of my boy for pursuing his passion, for staying true to what he wanted to do even though most of those around him were trying to persuade him to go a different route and for being his own person...... it's what we raised him for.

Christmas is coming......

it's important to keep busy I reckon....

well, it's important to keep the kids busy during their Christmas holiday at least,
lest they spend too much time feeling the parcels beneath the Christmas tree
in a vain attempt to guess what it is that people have sent for them to open on
Christmas day....

so here they are busily stacking a load of logs into the shed where they will be
kept nice and dry until the time comes for them to keep us
nice and toasty during the Christmas festivities
{actually, you only get pictures with evie in because isaac kept
telling me that he didn't want his photo on the blog!!}

ooooooh, I've been very lax.......

time flies by and suddenly I realise that I haven't written anything on here for AGES......

I guess it's because I don't feel there's much worth writing about when really all we are doing is our 'day-to-day' stuff......

but then, that's what life mostly consists of isn't it.......  the 'day-to-day'......
and let me tell you, I'm not going to complain about the 'day-to-day'......
I love my 'day-to-day', my 'ordinary' if you like........
I get to do the best job in the world...... every...... single....... day........
what's not to love......

and so, in our 'ordinary' we have recently had.......

haircuts........

evie and brian also joined in the haircutting frenzy,
but for those of you who know Brian and his haircut of choice,
you will understand that from one haircut
to another there is not a lot of visible difference in 'style'
so please forgive me for not posting a recent picture of him......
you can just imagine him the same way as the last time you saw him
and you would probably have a pretty accurate picture....

other things of note are........

that we have holidays coming up in just over two weeks' time
and then it's crazy birthday season in our house.......

evie is going to have her ears pierced for her 10th
{yes the littlest one is going into double digits}
birthday and she is VERY excited about the prospect
of wearing earings.......

she has waited a number of years for this BIG event to happen
{I think she first asked us about having her ears
pierced when she was about 7 years old}
and now that the day itself is within spitting distance she can
hardly contain herself.......

however, in the meantime, life goes on and she has been busy
learning about the circulatory system in science.......
recently she made a cracker, marshmallow and icing model of how the blood flows through the heart

it was pretty cool...... and eating it was cool too.....
I think science may be her favourite 'subject'....

{let me tell you, if I had been able to scoff marshmallows in science class
at school, it would probably have been my favourite subject too.....}

the doctor is in......

Dr. Evie was in class this morning
and did a grand job on her maths work....

she had her 'bag of tricks' with her and was ready
at a moments notice to attend to anyone who felt in the least bit 'off colour'.....

she used her stethascope to make sure we all had a heart.....
and off we went....

ingenious ideas........

I have discovered over the years that my daughter
has an ingenious knack of seeing the potential of things
to be used above and beyond what they were intended for......

take for example the hand towel ring in the bathroom......

why of course, it's perfect for drying Sylvanian Family clothes on.....
after you've given them all a thorough launder in the bathroom sink
because those pesky Sylvanian Families are SO grubby.....

and why not fill a trug a third full and get in it with your teddy -
even if you are about 4 years too big for the size of the trug......

she has now pleaded with me to see if we can find a bigger trug....
I know they make them but I just don't know where to get one from......

back to life, back to reality......

back to the here and now.....

well, back to school at least.....

we've done a week or so of school now and are just beginning
to get back into the groove of the days......
trying to fit things in.....
making sure there is enough time for 'just reading'
{although I don't know that I would ever be able to give Isaac enough time for 'just reading'......}

whilst having a bit of a clear out I came across these folders
with lots of those magazines you would
"buy fortnightly and build up your collection" -
and by the end of the collection you would have
spent a million pounds on the magazines......

I remember starting to collect them for Brian, before we were married,
to give him as a Christmas gift because he loves classical music....
I didn't get very far in my collecting I have to admit
though, it all got a bit expensive.....

and truth be told they have not been looked at much over the years
but they have been kept, along with the accompanying CD's,
and carted around the world waiting to be 'discovered'.....

well guess what? Isaac discovered them and is now happily
spending time reading about great composers and trying to
play the sample pieces of music supplied in the magazines on his keyboard....

sometimes I am very grateful that I hoard a little.......

other things that we have been up to include......

bug saving and releasing back to the wild after a good ol' look at it....

experiments involving baking soda and vinegar which
of course meant the need for protective eye gear.......

the making of a human cell using jelly and various sweets......
{forgot to use extra gelatin which meant we had a bit of a cell 'collapse'
on turning it out of the basin.... still, it looked good and tasted quite nice too.....}

then the consuming of said human cell......

yes, we're getting back into the groove......

glorious days.......

the weather has been spiffing here in Ballarat for the last few days and we have been enjoying the benefits.....

I even sang a little song to my kids one morning.....

you know the old one, 'the sun has got his hat on, hip, hip, hip hooray'?.....

funny, they didn't appreciate it!

well, what better way to finish off the school year than to have school outside....

I love our large covered deck out the back where we can enjoy the warmth in the air without frying under the sun's glare...... perfect......

our bits and bobs migrate out onto the table......

the morning tea snacks are consumed.......

and look..... I get to take my stuff outside too.......

there's a place for everyone......

AND there's a splash of sunshine inside too thanks to my lovely man.....

Haircuts.....

Still no photos of our recent holiday to show you as I haven't had a chance to go through them yet, and there are LOTS to go through, however I thought I would show you the most recent change in our house.......

Evie has not had a haircut since before we left the UK - that's more than TWO YEARS now!

As a little girl she was desperate to have long hair but we had always had it cut pretty short while she was young because of 'brushing issues'!!

However, when she reached the grand old age of 7 we said that she could grow it if she wanted to, and so she did.

Two years in the making......

However a few weeks ago she started telling me she wanted it cut short again....

I told her to give it a little while before we visited a hairdresser just in case she changed her mind....

but she hasn't....

Still adamant that she wanted short hair I took her to the hairdressers yesterday and now she looks like this......

it takes me back to when she was 5 or 6 and doing ballet and she used to have exactly the same haircut then....

and she loves it!

A day at home.....

we often have days at home at the weekend....

we are a 'home-y' kinda family, so today was not an exception....

Brian had to go to Melbourne for a professional development seminar so the kids and I decided to have a pj day (I only lasted til 10am but they managed the WHOLE day!!)......

I did have a bit of a plan in my head though that Evie really needed to tidy her built in robe which has become a bit like a magic closet into which things go, never to be seen again.....

She vehemently disagreed with this plan and spent about 10 minutes shouting from beneath her bed, where she had positioned herself, that she 'HATED' tidying and she 'WASN'T' going to do it.....

she eventually got over that and, as I had said I would give her a hand (because she cannot bring herself to throw ANYTHING away..... even rubbish..... and rubbish was a big part of what needed to be thrown away from the contents of her closet.....) we got down to it

She sat amongst her piles of 'stuff' and I got busy putting things in the bin....

then I had to stop for sustinence.....

and then Isaac decided he wanted to rebuild all the Playmobil sets in the front room.... so I helped with that too...... because I love building Playmobil......

Now, Evie's closet is tidy..... for the next day or two at least.... and all the Playmobil sets are set up ready for play....

We have a long weekend this weekend (Monday off school..... yeah!!) so I wonder what other things we can get up to......

A day at the beach.....

we have just had the LAZIEST of holidays.....

two weeks doing ABSOLUTELY nothing.... except have morning and afternoon tea ...... make cakes to accompany said refreshments.... do a little bit of sewing & crocheting..... and stay in my pj's until the sun was well and truly in the middle of the sky!

I just about managed [to get off the sofa/drag myself away from the sewing machine] to cook a meal each day!

oh, this slow pace of life suits me...... REALLY IT DOES!

We also squeezed in a couple of days at the beach where some friends have a little 'get-away' and had kindly given us the keys.....

The second day we were there was GLORIOUS.... warm, bright blue sunny skies and it definitely didn't feel like the middle of winter....

Oh look, there's one of those afternoon teas I was talking about!!

As the day had been so nice we decided, just as the sun was setting, to make our second trip of the day to the beach..... Isaac had a desire to dig 'sink holes' - he has always had a fascination with digging holes right at the edge of where the waves reach and then watching the waves fill up the hole and then he digs it out again.... and so it goes on.

just a couple of photos of the kids..... they are great.... such fun to spend time with.... don't they look all windswept and beachy.......

Then Brian decided to play the 'let's-dunk-the-kids-head-first-into-the-sinkhole' game.......

so the kids decided to play the 'let's-push-dad-into-the-sea' game......

but look who ended up getting soaked...... oh, what a surprise!

there was nothing else for it but to go to the local fish and chip shop and get huge bags of fish and so-hot-they-could-burn-your-lips chips with lashings of salt and vinegar...... yummy!

back to reality now......

Monday, 21 June 2010

Oh, what a weekend.....

I had one of those weekends which makes you all happy and yet all sad at the same time.....

I became a GREAT aunt last Thursday evening (well Friday morning for me here).... now that's something that doesn't happen every day isn't it? ..... and something very definitely worth being happy about..... very happy.... bouncy happy infact..... along with my daughter, who was also very bouncy and very happy!

We were so excited and delighted to see the newest addition to our family via the wonders of the internet and skype.......

She's beautiful.... 10 finger and 10 toes..... all there and all scrum-diddly-umptious.

HOWEVER, the fact that I had to see my new great niece through a computer screen instead of being able to hold her in my arms and kiss the top of her head whilst drinking in that unmistakeable baby smell.....

the fact that I am not present to celebrate with the people I love so very much the exceptional gift of new life.....

the fact that my beautiful daughter cannot sit and gaze at this tiny poppet and let her grab her finger just like her cousin, who is now a mamma herself, did to her nearly nine years ago......

these things all made me a bit sad....

And so, I look forward to December 3rd when I can hold them all and enjoy their presence and can laugh with them (without the time delay that you get with being 9,500 miles away)..... that thought, that date, makes me happy......

Couch potato......

it's official.....

I have a severe case of 'couchy-potato-itis'.....

My evenings are becoming a bit of a routine that goes something like this....

1. kids to bed..... check
2. cup of coffee in hand..... check
3. a couple of squares of chocolate to go with the coffee..... check
4. laptop within clicking distance.... check
5. crochet supplies within grabbing distance..... check
6. anything else which I need to have nearby in order to prepare for tomorrow's school day..... check

and at the moment I have my camera books at hand as I am trying to learn how to use my camera better...... check

These things occupy one half of the couch....

And my big bottom occupies the other side.....

A perfect evening ahead for me.... and Brian will just have to find his own spot I'm afraid - there's not enough room for sharesees!

Phase one......

here's a picture of phase one in the secret plans and clever tricks....

a little sofa for the corner in the school/craft room.....

In our house in Bristol we had a little sofa in the corner of the kitchen/diner/school room and it was where the kids always used to snuggle up to read while I got on with other things.

And I've missed it..... the kids have missed it too.... missed having a special little reading 'nook' to which they could retreat and get lost in a good book while still feeling part of what was going on in the heart of our home.

So last weekend we acquired a little sofa and within minutes it was claimed and made 'theirs'....

They pulled through one of the quilts from the front room (nothing like snuggling under a quilt on a chilly day to read) and took a couple of cushions off the chairs just to make it all a bit more comfy and squishy.

I have plans for a new quilt and cushion covers to brighten it up ...... but wait, that's getting into phase two of my plans!!

Anyway, it's not just the kids that are enjoying the new space..... I tell you, leave the computer alone for 2 minutes and the cat will be enjoying the warmth!!

Oh, and our postcard has arrived at its destination in Germany (that was quick) so we should get one fairly soon..... I need to go out postcard buying so that we can send some more......

A little corner......

see this little corner?

I have secret plans and clever tricks planned.....

it involves a little sofa.....

some squishy pillows.......

and a snuggly blanket or two.......

plus a couple of kids and a few books..... just for good measure.....

June 2nd...

Winter......

It's here..... or so the calendar tells me....

But it doesn't FEEL like winter.....

It just feels glorious.....

And look at the buds on the magnolia tree in our front yard.....

It is going to be full of flowers before we know it....

Holiday Monday.....

Today was a holiday day here ..... so Brian was off school..... and so were the kids.... yeah!

They had boiled eggs and toast soldiers for breakfast..... big question is will the yolk be runny or hard? My money is ALWAYS on the 'hard' bet as I am RUBBISH at soft yolked eggs.....

Here is Isaac doing what he does best..... nose in a book! Look at his hair! He has decided to grow it long over the autumn and winter and it looks like a haystack ALL THE TIME... but I love it (and I love all the curls that appear around his neck and ears when his hair gets any length to it... reminds me of when he was a baby!! Don't tell him I said that!)

And now? Well I am sitting down with a luscious cup of coffee and one of these....

How do you eat yours?

Homeschool highlights......

My kids love science...... I mean they seriously LOVE science....

If they can do experiments and learn why things work the way they do then it makes for happy children..... especially for Isaac who, I am convinced one day, will take something really important apart (like the laptop) just so he can see how it works! I don't mind him pulling apart some things...... but please.... not the computer!

Now Evie, well her selection of books from the library ALWAYS includes books about living things (a girl after my own heart) and 'nature' is definitely her 'thing'!

So this year we are doing a course called Real Science 4 Kids and I have to say, they are loving it!

Every week we read a chapter in the textbook (it's chemistry at the moment) and every week they get to do a hands on experiment illustrating the stuff talked about in the chapter. Now, I was rubbish at chemistry at school, it was the one science I dropped out of ...... but let me tell you it is so much fun learning it second time round with kids.....

So here they are learning all about how molecules are formed..... with marshmallows and toothpicks..... I even bought the four coloured marshmallows so that we could make distinctions between the different type of atoms!! What fun we had....

To begin with they were allowed to build molecules with no rules..... ah, what weird and wacky shapes they came up with!

Then they moved on to building molecules following simple rules. And after all of that..... we played fluffy bunnies.......

Sunday, 21 February 2010

Weekending....

Pluots::
yum, yum! Dot introduced me to these and I am a convert! I had never eaten one until a few weeks ago and I have to say they are rather delicious...... (they're a cross between an apricot and a plum I discovered!)

Dressing up::
both of them this time delved into the dress up chest and came out as pirates...... ah ha, me hearties...... (Isaac is a kind of Captain Marvel/Pirate cross!!)

Sunshine::
Enjoying the beautifully warm sunny weather on the back deck drinking a new-to-us favourite.......

Peanut butter, chocolate & ice cream milk shakes...... another yum factor.....

Hope your weekend was filled with good things......

Wednesday, 3 February 2010

Lego........ like we need any more.....

We gave the kids a 'new to us' Harry Potter Lego set today......

It was VERY well received......

We had full recall of the dialogue from the film whilst re-enactment happened with the characters.......

Here is Ron Weasley caught in the ...... trap (look, I have no idea what the proper name for these things is ..... that's the kids' department!!)

I forsee many happy hours of Potter-ing........

endings and beginnings......
